India is a place of spiritual and religious significance. In India, there are many festivals and occasions when people observe fast to show their respect, love, and faith for our deities.
These occasions can include weekly fasts, Navratri, Ekadashi, Shivratri, Pradesh, and many more. I fast every Monday. Similarly, all seven days are devoted to some deities, and devotees observe fasts on particular days. There are so many days you can't actually keep a count of them.
In India, fasting rules vary from community to community, place to place. One can eat certain ingredients as per their rule, but others may not add that to their vrat food. For example, We don't eat cumin seeds, chilies, coriander leaves, curry leaves, many vegetables, or ground spices.
So, while making my fasting recipes, I keep in mind to avoid these ingredients. However, a maximum number of people are allowed to have them. So, before deciding on your menu for fasting, check with your family members first.
Use refined oil and ghee to cook on these days. Complete no to mustard oil.

Some easy fasting recipes
1. Kuttu Pakode - Easy Fasting Recipes
Kuttu pakode or kuttu chips is made from kuttu atta or buckwheat flour. This gluten-free flour is widely used as a pulse during fasting or falahar. Kuttu is more prevalent in North and Central India. This is an easy and quick fasting recipe.
2. Kuttu Chips
Kuttu pakode can be made in two ways. One with boiled potatoes and another as sliced chips. Both are tasty, but these chips are crispy. This is super easy to make and takes no time to make kuttu chips.
2. Kuttu Aloo Tikki- Fasting recipes
Kuttu Tikki is another easy yet tasty falahar recipe. This is prepared by mixing mashed potatoes and buckwheat flour. Remember to use rock salt only, as regular salt is prohibited on fasting days.
Similarly, you can make this tikki by replacing the kuttu atta with singhara atta (water chestnut flour) or rajgira atta (amaranth Flour).
For a complete meal, serve this tikki or poori with aloo tomato or dahi aloo. They also taste great with plain curd or with tea as snacks.
3. Samvat Khichdi
Samvat or barnyard millet makes a great food option for fasting days. These go well in savory preparation and sweet pudding. This is more filling and acts as a replacement for rice. You can add dry fruits and roasted peanuts to the recipe. Serve with curd or aloo tomato curry for the best result.
If you don't eat spices (like me), you can make it with only salt and black pepper and serve it with curd. Or make a sweet pudding with samvat (sama chawal kheer)
4. Sabudana Khichdi - Fasting Recipes
Sabudana khichdi is an authentic Maharashtrian cuisine. This is popular across the country. Sabudana is one of the most commonly used foods on fasting days. This is also easy to prepare and takes little time. Peanuts and potatoes are also added to this khichdi. Learn how to make non-sticky, fluffy sabudana khichdi. Out of all fasting recipes, this is most common in Maharashtra.
5. Sabudana Vada
Sabudana vada is another fasting recipe made with sabudana or tapioca pearls. Potatoes are used to bind sabudana into vada or tikki. You can also make small balls of the same to make pakoda.
6. Sabudana Kheer
This is a sweet dish of Sabudana or tapioca pearl. It's really quick and easy to make this kheer for your fasting. Apart from the fasting recipe, this is an excellent baby food rich in carbs. Add loads of dry fruits to enhance the taste of kheer. Read more.
7. Aloo Tomato Curry - Fasting Recipes
Potatoes are a more common vegetable allowed during fasting days. Some also eat tomatoes, other spices. This common curry recipe goes well with singhara ki poori or any falahar paratha and poori or rice.
8. Aloo Jeera
One of the cleanest of clean recipes. Takes only 2 minutes with boiled potatoes. Serve this as a snack or side on fasting days. This has only cumin seeds and salt. No other spices are used here.
9. Dahi Aloo
This is another quick fasting recipe. But you can do this on regular days as well. I like dahi aloo with plain rice or jeera rice. You can make sama khichdi to serve with dahi aloo for fasting recipes. Or it also goes well with poori or thalipeeth.
10. Lauki Halwa
Lauki halwa or lauki launj is a sweet dish made with bottle gourd. It takes little time. Lauki launj is a very popular dessert in North India. We make this in Janmashtami. You can make instant lauki halwa with milk powder or condensed milk. But when I make them for fasting days, I make them with homemade khoya and reduced milk. The process is a little time-consuming.
11. Lauki Bhujia
Since lauki or bottle gourd is allowed on fasting days, I make this farali lauki bhujia as a side dish to my vrat menu. This is almost similar to my other low-carb bhujia recipe, other than a few ingredients that are not allowed to be consumed on such days.
12. Sweet Mixed Fruits Raita
Sweet raita is a perfect dish for fasting days. Excellent for summers. Perfect blend of sweet, sour cooling curd with lots of fruits to keep your energy level up and keep a happy gut. Add whatever fruits are available to you. This is rich filling and healthy also.
13. Banana Fig Smoothie
This is an all-season favorite drink. Bananas are one of the common fruits available in all seasons and at low prices. Apart from that, it's a storehouse of many vitamins and nutrients.
In place of figs, you can add other dry fruits like cashews, almonds, or mixed dry fruits.
14. Mango Milkshake
If it's summer, you need to hydrate yourself even if you are fasting. More than food and drinks are necessary these days. Again, mango is a seasonal fruit, so replace other meals with this yummy drink. The sweet mango and milk will provide energy and keep you full for longer. If it's not mango season, replace mango with other fruits and dry fruits.
15. Crispy Plain Potato Chips
This is the perfect tea-time snack. It takes the least time. Slice potatoes and fry. Serve hot with hot ginger tea. One trick to making it crispy is to soak it in ice water and drain out excess starch. The chips will turn out extra crispy.
16. Farali Lauki Raita
Here's another lauki or bottle gourd recipe for falahaar. This is one of the best side dishes not only for fasting days but also for everyday food. It's also an excellent weight loss recipe. One glass of lauki raita will do magic if you are on a low-carb diet.
17. Apple Halwa - Fasting recipes
Apple halwa is a quick and easy dessert that takes less than 15 minutes to prepare. If you are making this halwa for vrat or fasting, remove the essence and cinnamon from the original recipe.
