How to cook cabbage?
If you ask me how I cook cabbage, there are 2 ways to cook cabbage right. One is stir-fry cabbage on high flame just like we do for Chinese dishes. And second is to saute the cabbage on medium-low flame. In both ways, I don't add water at all to simmer. Let the cabbage cook in heat and in oil. Also, place a lid on it. It will create steam which is enough to cook the cabbage. Don't overcook the cabbage, or else it will be mushy and soggy.
Sauteed Cabbage with lemon & garlic
Ingredients and alternatives - (5 Ingredients)
Green Cabbage - Cabbage is obviously the hero ingredient. For this recipe, I have taken green cabbage. You may also add red cabbage.
Onion - Sliced onions add flavor to the cabbage. Substitute onion with onion powder.
Garlic - Garlic has a strong aroma and flavor. It combines well with sauteed vegetables. I recommend using fresh garlic. However, you can add garlic powder alternatively.
Salt & Pepper - Salt and ground pepper are basic seasonings. If you like you can add any other seasoning to the recipe. If you like spicy, add a little cayenne pepper. Or smoked paprika will be great too.
Lemon Juice - Lemon juice balances the flavor and brings that freshness to the cabbage fry.
You can also add other spices like cayenne pepper, paprika,, taco seasoning, etc.
How to make sauteed cabbage?
This is a simple, easy, and quick cabbage recipe. You just need to saute it with onions, and garlic for flavor. It's one of the quickest recipes and takes less than 15 - 20 minutes.
Heat olive oil (generously) in a skillet or pan. Saute garlic and onions till fragrant. Don't brown them initially. Add shredded cabbage to the pan. Add seasoning of salt, pepper, and some spice like cayenne pepper or paprika.
Otherwise, if you love spicy food, you can add any pepper to the recipe. Else just skip it. Add 2 - 3 tbsp water and cover with a lid. And cook for 7 - 10 minutes on low flame. Keep stirring in between. In the end, add 1 tbsp lemon juice and mix them nicely.
Garlic adds more flavor to the dish. So add fresh minced garlic generously to the sauteed cabbage. You can also substitute this with garlic powder. But fresh garlic adds a true freshness to the dish. However, you can decide your own amount of garlic as per the taste and flavor you need.
Note - You can also add some other veggies to your sauteed cabbage dish, e.g. green peas, cabbage, and green beans are a great addition to it. You can take whole cabbage and shred it roughly/ finely as you like. Else go for ready coleslaw mix for this recipe.
How to store and reheat?
You can store it for weeks in the refrigerator. Store the leftover in an airtight box and refrigerate for the week. Reheat and serve when required. This is excellent for meal prep as well. To reheat, place it in a microwave-safe container and heat for 1 minute. If required add some fresh herbs to the sauteed cabbage and enjoy.
How to serve sauteed cabbage?
This is so versatile that you can serve this with anything. Serve it with bread or rice as an entree. Add to cooked quinoa or savory oatmeal dish. It's great to serve sauteed cabbage as a side dish to any of your meals. If you are on diet, make your sauteed cabbage a complete meal. It's too good and delicious in anyways.
