How to cook cabbage?
If you ask me how I cook cabbage on the stove, there are 2 ways to cook cabbage right.
One is stir-fry cabbage on high flame just like we do for Chinese dishes. And the second way is to saute the cabbage on medium-low flame.
Don't add more water (2 - 3 tbsp is okay though) while cooking cabbage. Let the cabbage gets cooked in heat and in oil. Also, place a lid on the pan while sauteing the cabbage. It will create steam which is enough to cook the cabbage.
Don't overcook the cabbage, or else it will be mushy and soggy. Cabbage tastes best when it's just cooked tender but still has a bite in it.
You can also try air fryer cabbage.
Sauteed Cabbage with lemon & garlic
This sauteed cabbage is one of the easy cabbage recipes where you don't need to do a lot of preparation other than chopping cabbage.
Here you can chop them finely or roughly with bite-sized chunks. Otherwise, you can thinly slice them or shred them using a potato peeler. The thinner you chop them, the lesser cooking time they will take.
So the cooking time will vary with the shape of the cabbage you cut.
Ingredients and alternatives - only 5 Ingredients
Green Cabbage - Cabbage is obviously the hero ingredient. For this recipe, I have taken green cabbage. You may also add red cabbage.
Onion - Sliced onions add flavor to the cabbage. Substitute onion with onion powder.
Garlic - Garlic has a strong aroma and flavor. It combines well with sauteed vegetables. I recommend using fresh garlic. However, you can add garlic powder alternatively.
Salt & Pepper - Salt and ground pepper are basic seasonings. If you like you can add any other seasoning to the recipe. If you like spicy, add a little cayenne pepper. Or smoked paprika will be great too.
Lemon Juice - Lemon juice balances the flavor and brings that freshness to the cabbage fry.
You can also add other spices like cayenne pepper, paprika, taco seasoning, etc.
How to make sauteed cabbage?
This is a simple, easy, and quick cabbage recipe. You just need to saute it with onions, and garlic for flavor. It's one of the quickest recipes and takes less than 15 - 20 minutes.
Heat olive oil in a skillet or pan. Saute garlic and onions till fragrant. Don't brown them initially. Add finely chopped cabbage to the pan. Give them a nice stir. Add seasoning of salt, pepper, and some spice like cayenne pepper or paprika.
Otherwise, if you love spicy food, you can add any pepper to the recipe. Else just skip it. Add 2 - 3 tbsp water and cover with a lid. And cook for 7 - 10 minutes on low flame. Keep stirring in between. In the end, add 1 tbsp lemon juice and mix them nicely.
Garlic adds more flavor to the dish. So add fresh minced garlic generously to the sauteed cabbage. You can also substitute this with garlic powder. But fresh garlic adds a true freshness to the dish. However, you can decide your own amount of garlic as per the taste and flavor you need.
Note - You can also add some other veggies to your sauteed cabbage dish, e.g. diced green beans or diced potatoes are a great addition to it. You can take whole cabbage and shred it roughly/ finely as you like. Else go for ready coleslaw mix for this recipe.

You can store it for weeks in the refrigerator. Store the leftover in an airtight box and refrigerate for a week.
Reheat and serve when required. This is excellent for meal prep as well.
