Mushroom tikka masala is a delicious main course Indian restaurant-style curry. This authentic Indian curry is rich and creamy and makes the perfect party food.

Mushroom Tikka Masala
This delicious curry requires little preparation, especially marinating the vegetables so that they will absorb the flavors of the spices. Again, this rich curry is perfect for any special occasion or party at your home. Serve this rich, creamy, spicy mushroom tikka curry with tandoori roti, naan, or paratha. This even goes well with steamed rice.
I normally make paneer tikka masala. This time, I have replaced paneer with mushrooms andย cauliflower. These tikka masala curries are so drool-worthy and mouth-watering. It's an extremely tempting mushroom curry, indeed.
You can easily veganize this by substituting yogurt with vegan yogurt. The rest of the recipe will be the same as mentioned.
What is mushroom tikka masala?
Mushroom Tikka masala is a North Indian curry. This is made with marinated and roasted mushrooms cooked in tomato-based gravy. Tikka refers to marinated and roasted/ grilled vegetables. This is inspired by chicken tikka masala, which is a vegetarian version of it.
You can also change the vegetables according to your choice. Instead of mushrooms, you can take paneer cubes, tofu cubes, cauliflower, other vegetables, etc. You can play around with the ingredients and try making different tikka masala recipes.
How to make mushroom tikka masala?
I'll divide the process into three easy steps.
I - Marinate Mushrooms in spices
II - Bake, grill, or shallow fry the marinated mushrooms.
III - Prepare creamy gravy and simmer mushrooms in it.
Step I - Preparing Marinade Mixture
The base is hung curd or thick Greek yogurt for tikka masala marinade.
Vegan - Substitute hung curd with vegan yogurt.
Hung curd (vegan yogurt) + Ginger Garlic Paste + Coriander Powder + Cumin Powder + Red Chilli Powder + Turmeric Powder + Garam Masala + Chat Masala + Roasted Chickpea Flour + Lemon Juice
Add all ingredients well. Whisk to a smooth paste. Marinate the mushrooms for 30 - 45 minutes at minimum. Also, add bell peppers and onion cubes to marinate along with mushrooms.
Step II - Preparing Mushroom Tikka:
Heat oil in a pan and pan-fry the marinated veggies. You can also bake in an oven or air fryer. Or grill the vegetables. Remove from oil and place on a clean paper napkin.
Step III - Preparation of Gravy
Soak cashew nuts in hot water for 30 minutes. Then blend them to a smooth paste. If you are making it in small quantities, blend the cashews and the tomatoes to a smooth paste.
Heat some oil in a pan or kadai. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add finely chopped onion and ginger-garlic paste. Saute for a minute or two until the onions become translucent. Then add the tomato puree and cook for 2 minutes. Then, add the ground spices to the pan.
Simmer it until the masala is cooked well and starts releasing oil. To this, add cashew paste and stir to mix them well. Add the rest of the tikka marinade to the curry and simmer.
In the end add mushroom tikka and again simmer for 3 - 5 minutes. Then add crushed roasted kasuri methi and finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves. Drizzle some more cream/ coconut cream and serve hot.

Preparation of Mushroom Tikka
- 250 gms mushroom
- 1 bell pepper diced into bite-sized pieces
- 1 onion roughly diced into bite-sized
- ยผ cup hung curd
- 2 tbsp roasted gram flour
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- ยฝ tsp turmeric powder
- ยฝ tsp garam masala powder
- ยฝ tsp chaat masala
- ยฝ tsp salt to taste
Preparation of gravy for tikka masala
- 2 medium onions finely chopped
- 2 medium tomatoes
- 8 - 12 cashew nuts
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
- 2 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- ยฝ tsp cumin powder
- ยฝ tsp turmeric powder
- ยฝ - ยพ tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp kasuri methi dry roasted
- 2 - 3 tbsp coriander leaves finely chopped
Instructions
Preparation of Mushroom Tikka
- Mix all ingredients mentioned above in mushroom tikka preparation section.
- Marinate mushrooms, peppers and onions for 20 -30 minutes.
- Heat 5 - 6 tbsp oil in a pan.
- Shallow fry marinated mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions in batches.
- Remove from oil when turn golden and keep aside.
Preparation of curry gravy
- Heat 4 tbsp oil in a pan.
- Add finely chopped onion or grated onion.
- Now add ginger garlic paste.
- Saute till onion becomes translucent.
- Puree tomatoes and cashews to a fine paste.
- Add tomato cashew paste to the pan. Saute for 2 - 3 minutes.
- Add all dry spices and cook till it leaves oil on sides.
- Add little water now And simmer.
- Pour in the rest left out marination mixture to the gravy.
- Now add fried mushroom and pepper onion pieces to the pan.
- Cover with a lid and simmer for 3 minutes.
- Add crushed dry roasted kasuri methi and coriander leaves.
- Mushroom Tikka Masala is ready to serve.
