Air fryer onion fritters are a delicious and healthier twist on the classic snack. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, they make a perfect appetizer or side dish.
When we think about fritters, we usually think of deep-frying them to make them crispy. But these onion fritters are something you can eat guilt-free since only minimal oil is used. The fritters are equally crispy yet flavorful, thanks to the air fryer. The high-heating formula of the air fryer cooks the fritters perfectly without using a lot of oil.
Onion fritters are great vegan appetizers. They are crispy on the outside yet soft, tender bites of onion on the inside. Serve them with any of your favorite dips. If you love spicy food, try the fritters with cilantro dip. You can check my vegan dips post and choose the best one.
Ingredients to make air fryer onion fritters
Onion - red onion or white onion, whichever is available. I have taken red onion as that's widely available at my place.
Garlic and ginger - I have taken ginger garlic paste. Substitute with garlic powder only.
Chickpea flour - Also known as gram flour.
Rice flour - You need this in smaller quantities. However, it brings crispness to the fritters. Substitute - corn starch
Seasoning - salt, a pinch of turmeric, paprika, ground coriander
Instructions
Slice onions and keep them in a mixing bowl. Add a tsp salt and gently mix it with onion slices (preferably by hand). Let it sit for 10 minutes to release the moisture.
After 10 minutes, check that the onions have released some moisture. Don't remove that. Add chickpea flour, rice flour, and spices to the bowl. Drizzle 1 tsp olive oil and mix thoroughly. Add water gradually. It may take 4 - 5 tbsp water to make the batter of the right consistency. A too-thin consistency won't hold shape in the air fryer. The onion mixture should be thick enough.
Preheat the air fryer to 400 F for 3 - 4 minutes. Grease the inner part or use a silicon mat for this recipe to avoid sticking of the fritters. Take out a spoonful of mixture and place it in the air fryer. Arrange them in a single layer. Spray or brush some oil on them. Air fry them for 10 minutes at 350 F or 175 C. Then, increase the temperature to 400 F (200 C) and air fry for 5 - 6 minutes more.
How to serve?
They taste the best with spicy cilantro dip. However, you can serve them with any of your favorite dips. Even simple tomato ketchup goes well with the onion fritters. You can choose from the list of vegan dips.
