This falafel wrap is a flavorful, plant-based meal with crispy falafel, fresh vegetables, and creamy sauces wrapped in soft flatbread. This delightful blend of Mediterranean flavors makes a quick and satisfying meal.
This falafel wrap is a bit different from the traditional ones. Traditionally, hummus and tahini sauce are served in any falafel combo. But here, I have used herby garlic sauce in place of tahini.
These are so easy and quick to make. With healthier roasted falafel, veggies, and roasted potatoes, these wraps are so filling, and the drizzle of herby garlic sauce was the real tastemaker for me.
What Is Falafel?
These are chickpea meatballs. Falafel is a popular Middle Eastern dish. A mix of chickpeas or fava beans, herbs, spices, and onions is formed into balls or patties and deep-fried until crispy. You can also bake them in the oven or air fryer to give them a healthier twist. These are vegan and gluten-free and serve as vegan meatballs, too.
Falafel is one of the best street foods in Middle Eastern countries. It is often served in pita bread or flatbreads, accompanied by fresh vegetables and tahini or other sauces. These are great vegan appetizers. You can also make falafel salad.
Making Falafel Wrap
To make the falafel wrap, you need some basic ingredients readily available in everyone's pantry.
Making Falafel for Wrap
- Soaked chickpeas
- Garlic, Onion
- Gren chili/ serrano pepper/ jalapeno pepper
- Cilantro leaves
- Seasoning - ground cumin, coriander, salt, paprika, black pepper
- Olive oil or avocado oil spray
Add all the above ingredients (except olive oil) to a food processor and blend until smooth without adding water. Then, take a scoop out and make roundels or disc shapes. Make lemon-sized balls from the mixture. You can deep-fry the falafel till golden brown.
Preheat the air fryer to 375 F (190 C) for 3 minutes. Then, transfer the balls to the air fryer basket. Arrange the balls in a single layer. Spray or brush some oil on them. Air fry at 375 F (190 F) for 15 minutes until they turn golden and crisp. You can flip them carefully with the help of a spoon and keep an eye after the 12-minute mark. Once they reach the desired doneness, remove them and keep them aside.
For Roasted Potatoes
- Diced potatoes - soak in ice water for 15 - 20 minutes.
- Flavor - ginger garlic paste or simply garlic powder
- Seasoning - ground cumin, ground coriander, pinch of turmeric, paprika, salt to taste
- Olive oil - to coat
Dice the potatoes and wash them once or twice to remove excess starch. Then, soak the potatoes in ice water for 15 - 20 minutes. Remove them from the water and wipe them using a kitchen towel. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add the seasonings along with a drizzle of oil. Toss to coat the potatoes well. Transfer the seasoned potatoes to a preheated air fryer basket and air fry at 400 F (200 C) for 14 minutes. Shake them halfway to ensure even cooking. However, this is optional.
For Herby Garlic Sauce
- Garlic - fresh garlic is the best
- Cilantro leaves + Parsley
- Vegan mayonnaise or vegan sour cream (hung curd for non-vegans)
- Lemon juice
- Jalapeno pepper or serrano pepper (depending on taste)
- Salt to taste
Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend to a smooth mixture. Herby garlic sauce is ready in minutes.
For Serving Falafel Wrap
- Pita bread or Flatbread - here I have taken whole wheat flatbread
- Sliced onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, cilantro leaves
- Hummus, Herby Garlic Sauce
Take a pita bread or flatbread. Spread some hummus if you are using it. Arrange the falafels along with roasted potatoes. Add some sliced cucumber, tomatoes, and onions. Then, drizzle the herby garlic sauce over them generously. You can also use the sauce as a spread and substitute hummus. A delicious homemade falafel wrap is ready to serve. This makes a satisfying high-protein meal that is vegan.
