Rice is a plant product. But this is not counted as a vegetable. Rice is a grain. This is one of the ancient grains and one of the most consumed grains across the globe. It's a staple food in many countries too.
Rice is a member of the grass family and is widely cultivated in many continents like Africa and Asia. Rice is typically grown in flooded fields or paddies since they require a steady supply of water. After harvesting the rice they are processed for dehusking and removing the bran layers. Through this continuous processing, we get white rice that is edible.

There are many different types of rice, each with its own unique flavor, texture, and culinary uses. Here are some of them:
- White rice: This is the most common type of rice. It has a mild flavor and a fluffy texture.
- Brown rice: This type of rice is less processed than white rice and healthier than white rice. It is a good source of fiber and nutrients.

Is Rice A Vegetable?
So rice is not a vegetable. Rather it's a grain. Rice plays the role of base for many vegetarian dishes, but the rice itself is not a vegetable.
Vegetables are defined as the edible parts of the plants like leaves, flowers, stems, and roots. On the other hand, rice is a seed of the grass Oryza Sativa.

Botanically, fruits are the mature ovaries of flowering plants that develop from fertilized flowers and typically contain seeds. Rice, on the other hand, is a type of grass seed (Oryza Sativa) and is classified as a cereal grain.
Can vegetarians and vegans eat rice?
Rice is a plant-based produce. Naturally, this is vegan and plant-based. So vegetarians and vegans can eat rice until you add any non-vegan or meat products to the rice. It's one of the simplest recipes to make rice. You can make your plain rice on the stovetop or in the instant pot or in a rice cooker easily.
Is Rice Healthy?
Rice is a rich source of carbohydrates and hence it provides us with energy. Children and people who do laborious work should consume carbohydrate-rich food more. It is also low in fat and cholesterol and contains some essential vitamins and minerals, such as thiamin, niacin, and iron.
So alone rice may not provide you with all the required nutrients. So rice is just a part of your meal but does not make up for a completely balanced meal.
To make the meal or diet balanced, you need to combine rice with green vegetables, and protein like pulses, dairy like yogurt, cheese(for non-vegans), salads, etc.
While producing rice it has been processed to clean and dehusk the seeds.
Is Brown Rice Healthier Than White Rice?
Brown rice is generally considered healthier than white rice due to its higher nutritional content. Brown rice retains its bran and germ layers, which are rich in dietary fiber. Fiber promotes healthy digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and contributes to satiety.
It also contains higher levels of vitamins and minerals compared to white rice. Brown rice contains natural antioxidants, such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which have potential health benefits, including reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
However, white rice is often fortified with nutrients, such as iron and certain B vitamins. Additionally, individual dietary needs and preferences may vary, so it's important to consider overall dietary balance and moderation when choosing between brown and white rice.
