Sandwich Uttapam | Masala Uttapam Sandwich recipe with step-by-step instructions. This is an excellent and unique South Indian breakfast recipe.

    Sandwich Uttapam

This is the next version of myย masala uttapam. In this uttapam, I have stuffed potato masala between two layers of batter. There are different ways to prepare this sandwich uttapam, and you can choose your stuffing. This is an easy dish and one of the best and most filling breakfast recipes. It is alsoย kid-friendly.

Usually, I make such a dish for my weekend breakfast, but if I plan to make this for my kid's tiffin box, I do all the preparation from the night, i.e., preparing the batter and potato mixture. So, the only job to do in the morning is to spread the batter and make uttapam for the tiffin box.

    Sandwich Uttapam

How to make a sandwich uttapam?

    Ingredients you'll need:

    • Dosa/ Idli Batter
    • Salt to taste

    For Potato Stuffing Masala:-

    • Boiled potatoes - 4 -5 medium-sized potatoes, boiled, peeled, and mashed
    • Flavors - Onions, ginger grated, finely chopped garlic, curry leaves, green chilies, and cilantro leaves
    • Spices - cumin seeds, mustard seeds, sambar masala, turmeric powder, salt to taste, hing or asafoetida
    • Refined oil
    • Water as required (2 - 3 tbsp)

    How to make sandwich uttapam?

Step 1:- Prepare the potato stuffing

    • Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin and mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add curry leaves, ginger, garlic, green chilies, and onion, and saute until translucent.
    • Add salt, turmeric powder, and sambar masala. Sautรฉ for 10-15 sec, mixing with the onions. Add a little water (4-6 tbsp) and bring it to a boil.
    • Now add the mashed potatoes. Mix everything well. Keep the consistency mushy so it spreads easily. Add the chopped coriander leaves and mix well. The potato stuffing is ready.

    Preparing Sandwich Uttapam

    • Heat the dosa tawa on the stovetop (medium to low heat). Grease the tawa with a little oil.
    • Take 1 laddle batter and spread on the tawa. Spread the batter, keeping the circle slightly thicker.
    • Immediately sprinkle some sambar masala and chopped onion. Place 2-3 tbsp of potato stuffing and spread it lightly over the base layer. Keep flame on low heat.

    • On top of it, put 1 laddle batter more and spread it evenly, covering the stuffing. Sprinkle some more sambar masala or garam masala.
    • When the base layer is cooked, it will start leaving the tawa. Now, carefully flip the uttapam and cook the top layer for a while (2-3 minutes on a low flame).
    • Drop 1 tsp of oil from the sides. Remove from the tawa and serve hot with chutney and sambar.

    Extra Tips

    • Keep stuffing a little mushy, or else it will be difficult to stuff and spread on the base layer of uncooked uttapam. Keep the flame on low while spreading the batter and the masala.
    • Don't make the batter very thin. It should be thick like idli batter. Fluff it by whisking for 2 - 3 minutes with the help of a spoon or whisk.

How to prepare the batter for sandwich uttapam?

The batter used for this recipe is the same as that used for dosas and idlis. It's a mixture of rice and lentils. Read the full recipe for dosa batter in my post on masala dosa.

What alternative can I use in place of regular dosa batter?

You can make instant uttapam from rava, semolina, or other millet flour. Add curd to bring out the tanginess.
