If you want some good vegan appetizers, make these air fryer cabbage fritters. These are vegan and gluten-free and make crispy fritters with minimal use of oil. So enjoy the guilt-free snacks at your parties or serve them as a side dish.

    air fryer cabbage fritters

Fritters are typically fried snacks where the veggies are coated or mixed with flour and spices. You can deep-fry or pan-fry them. If you are following a plant-based diet, here you can find my collection of vegan fritters.

The oven also does a great job of making fritters healthier (using less oil). But it takes a lot of time to cook them crispy, and the heat the oven emits is not pleasant in hot summer. And here comes the air fryer, which cooks them equally crispy yet takes much less time to cook and doesn't emit so much heat because of its compact size.

    Ingredients you'll need

Cabbage -: chop them finely or shredded cabbage

Onion -: sliced or chopped onion

Green chilies -: optional; you can add any chilies, like jalapeno or serrano pepper, as per taste.

Fresh herbs -: chopped cilantro or parsley

Ginger garlic -: crushed ginger and garlic (substitute - garlic powder)

Flour -: chickpea flour and cornstarch (optional)

Spices - paprika, ground coriander, ground cumin, salt, and crushed black pepper to taste.

(Spice Substitute - add any of your favorite spice blend for flavor. To substitute fresh garlic, use garlic powder.)

Nutritional yeast adds a nice cheese-like flavor to vegan food like this. Substitute with vegan chicken bullion broth mix. Or skip if not available.

How to make air-fried cabbage fritters?

Cabbage fritters are easy to make in the air fryer. You may need parchment paper (perforated for air fryers) for best results. I have used my silicon sheet at the base, which makes it easier to flip and not sticky.

Step 1 - Prepare the batter

Chop the cabbage finely or shred it. Similarly, slice or chop the onions. Finely chop coriander leaves and chilies. (If you are making a large batch, you may need to squeeze out the cabbage for excess water (using the salting method) or make the batter as per the batch size).

Transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Add flour, cornstarch, spices, and herbs. Mix them well nicely, making a batter. Whisk it without adding any water. If it looks too dry to mix, leave it for 2 - 3 minutes. It will be moist enough to bind.

Step 2 - Preheat the air fryer and cook

Preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees C or 360 degrees F for 3 minutes.

Then, grease the silicon mat with oil spray. Place a spoonful of batter on the mat and pat it to flatten slightly, or flatten it slightly and then place it over the silicon mat.

Air fry for 12 - 14 minutes at 360F, flipping them halfway at 6 - 7 minutes. Spray some oil in the beginning and some after flipping them. Remove once they look done and crispy.

You can keep an eye on them and check after 10 minutes if they need more cooking and decide the timing afterward. Since all air fryers are different, the timing may vary between 2 - 3 minutes.
