Dal is a staple food in India. You can have this as soup, as main course with roti (flat bread) or even with Rice. Its high source of protein and fiber. In India the variety of lentils differs.

I try to make different types of dal each day. This adds variety to your meal and brings different variety to the food. Again the different tampering adds additional flavor to the lentils. Regular tampering consists of cumin seeds and ghee along with other ground spices. But if you will add more of spices then it will dominate the taste of lentils. Instructions
  1. Soak dal in water for 30 minutes. Then pressure cook in 1 glass water for 4 whistles. Add 1/4 tsp turmeric powder & 1/4 tsp turmeric powder.
  2. Heat 2 tbsp a pan. Add cumin seeds and let it crackle. Add chopped onions, garlic and saute till translucent.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes and saute till they are soft. Add coriander powder, red chilli powder and red chilli powder. Mix well.
  4. Add 1/4 cup water and simmer for another minute. Add pressure cooked dal to the pan and mix well.
  5. Add 1 tsp kasuri methi and 1 tsp coriander leaves and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Turn off gas after 5 minutes. Add 1/2 tsp garam masala to the dal. Also add ghee or clarified butter in the end and serve hot with rice or chapati (flat bread)
