Mix Veggies Lentils Soup – An Easy & Healthy Recipe

In India lentils soup or commonly known dal is prepared in many ways and its a part of daily diet. Lentils are high source of proteins and we must include them in our everyday food. There are many varieties of lentils which are available and cooked. Its a must for toddlers and kids (even if they don’t like it). We must inculcate the habit of healthy eating in our juniors. They need more protein, carb and fat in balanced way for their energy level and brain development. That’s why doctors advise to feed lentils soup to the kid. To add benefit of vegetables, what I did for my kid was to add almost all kinds of veggies (in small quantity, may be 2 – 3 pieces) along with the lentils. Then puree them together and strain to get that smooth puree. The same recipe is equally helpful for adults. We will get nutrition of lentils and vegetable in one pot and this Saves time also. Isn’t it a great deal where you don’t have to spend lots of time in kitchen to get healthy and tasty recipe. You can eat this as main course or as soup.

I don’t like to puree vegetables for this recipe. Its even better when you will get that bites of vegetables.


In eastern part of our country this recipe is one of the frequently cooked main dish (Daalma/ Daalna). Its a win-win recipe from health & taste perspective.. You can have this for weight-loss diet as this will keep you full for longer. In south part samber is similar except they add tamarind for extra sourness in it. In western part they add flattened wheat flour dough to the lentils and cook (Dal Dhokli). India is a rich country where we can see numerous variation of cooking and ingredients. Instructions
  1. Wash the lentils 2 to 3 times. Put in a pressure cooker. Add diced vegetables along with diced tomatoes. Add salt & turmeric powder. Pressure cook for 3 whistles or depending on which lentils being used. *read recipe note below.
  2. Prepare tampering. Add 1 tbsp oil. Once oil is hot add cumin seeds and garlic. After 10 seconds when garlic starts turning light brown, add coriander powder, cumin powder, red chilli powder. Immediately transfer the tampering to the cooker and close the lid.
  3. After 2 - 3 minutes add chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
Recipe Notes

# Pressure cook according to dal variety as moong dal gets cooked in 1 whistle where as tur dal takes 3 whistles. Vegetables gets cooked in 1 whistle. So cook accordingly.

# Adding spices is optional. You can use tampering of cumin seeds, garlic, asafoetida, red chili dry only to the lentils. That also tastes divine.

# Vegetables I have used here: potatoes, eggplant, carrots, cauliflower, green peas, bottle gourd, pumpkin, tomato.
