This one is my favorite section- Kids tiffin box recipes. The most difficult task for busy moms.
Being a mother I always look for dishes that I can make for my kid. Will he love the food? How to incorporate healthy components in food? There are so many factors we need to think about when it comes to our kids and their food.
Food habits change year by year. They will be choosy, fussy sometimes if they don’t get food of their choice. So we need to balance out between their favorite food and healthy components.
So getting an idea for kids tiffin box every day is a real area of concern for all moms.
Dal paratha I make because he doesn’t like dal but he likes paratha. So I knead the flour in cooked dal and make paratha with that dough. In this way, he gets the nutrition of lentils as well. Similarly, I try to stuff vegetables and paneer in paratha.
And he enjoys such food. So I’m happy too. While making paratha for my kid, I use cow ghee instead of refined oil. Ghee is very essential for bone health and brain development of kids.
So here is a list of 41 easy Indian & vegetarian kids tiffin box recipes with some suggestions to fasten the process.
Breakfast Items (For kids up to 5 – 6 yrs)
This is an easy kids tiffin box recipe and takes no time to prepare this sandwich. You should have only boiled potatoes ready in the refrigerator to fasten the process. Here we don’t need to saute potatoes with spices and cook. Just mix all ingredients and stuff in slices and grill or pan fry the sandwich to crisp. Add cheese slice to make it cheesy so that kids will love this.
This is again another bread snacking item. Here the stuffed breads are deep-fried and serve them with tomato ketchup. I have used potatoes for stuffing. But you can also stuff crumbled paneer and other veggies into it.
Another bread sandwich recipe but this is way more healthy and tasty kids tiffin box option. A perfect combination of spinach leaves and corn kernels. Super easy and creamy sandwich that is healthy for our kids. To make it quick in the morning, you can prepare the stuffing from the night and refrigerate for use in the morning. This is one of the quickest sandwich recipes for kids tiffin box. Pizza sandwich is made with two ingredients only primarily. You can add veggies and paneer or tofu to the sandwich. But primary ingredients are pizza sauce and cheese. Even if you don’t add any vegetables then also it tastes great.
These are the healthiest crepes for toddlers and kids. This is super easy to make and also at the same tie it’s filling and keeps baby full for longer. And this doesn’t need any preparation. This is an instant crepe. Many add rava and rice flour to make this crepe. But you can use only wheat flour to make this. Perfect kids tiffin box recipe.
Besan ka chilla or tomato omelette is another easy tiffin box recipe. This is made instantly. Just add tomato and onion for flavoring. This is a savory crepe made with chickpeas flour. This is also a quick and easy tiffin box recipe.
Tater tots are best for toddlers and pre-primary kids. Because these are the finger foods that your kid would love. Especially when kids are in preprimary they normally have less than 2 hours of schooling. So we can give them some finger foods that they can enjoy. Though this is not for everyday food, occasionally you can add this to your little munchkin’s tiffin. This is also easy you can prepare and store in the freezer. When required, deep fry or bake a few of them. Pack with some fruits or biscuits or idli.
Prepare dosa batter from the night and in the morning just make crepes and assemble potato masala for stuffing. So quick and easy kids tiffin box recipe. Similarly, you can use semolina, ragi for idli batter. To bring in some variation, you can try sauteing small idli pieces in mustard seeds, curry leaves etc to make masala idli.
Maggi is always a kid’s favorite food. I know moms are always concerned that this is not healthy food or this is junk food. But relax moms. This is not an everyday food for your kid. He is not going to eat this twice every day. But of course, we can give them their favorite food once or twice a week. Well, to add nutrition to this add lots of veggies to his/ her Maggi masala. Poha is a healthy breakfast option. This is made with flattened rice flakes. This is high in good carb, fiber. Poha is easy to prepare and takes hardly 5 – 10 minutes to prepare this quick breakfast item.
This is also similar to Kanda poha but we add potatoes and green peas instead of peanuts for variation. This also tastes equally great.
Rava upma is a very simple and basic breakfast recipe in India. This is a clean and quickest recipe. It takes hardly 2 minutes to prepare this healthy breakfast item. This is rich in fiber and protein. It keeps kids full for longer. Add only onion and ginger to keep it simple.
This is a variation to plain rava upma. You just need to saute some vegetables to regular upma to make this nutritious and healthy. Adding veggies to upma makes the upma even more delectable. To speed up the process, you can also saute vegetables and refrigerate overnight. In the morning just heat sauteed veggies and follow rest process of making upma.
Similar to rava upma this is made with vermicelli or semiya. Rest process would be similar to rava upma. But this will bring on little variation to regular taste. And kids love variety. Add veggies also.
It’s similar to vermicelli upma but the method of preparation is a little different. Here aromatic spices are added to make it flavourful. Add vegetables and paneer to make it healthier.
Quick and easy bread snack items for kids. Use crumbled paneer. Spice it up lightly and spread on the bread slice. Top it with cheese slice. As simple as that.
Another easy bread sandwich recipe with sauteed potato mixture. Spread sauce on bread slices and stuff it with spiced and sauteed potato slices. Grill or pan-fry on a griddle. Excellent for kid’s tiffin box.
Simple and easy if you have the batter ready. Takes 5 minutes to make 2 onion uttapam which is quick enough to make kids tiffin box recipe.
Masala uttapam is equally simple if you have potato mix and batter ready. Just spread potato mixture on uttapam. Masala uttapam is ready in 10 minutes. Just prepare potato mixture in the night to speed up the process.
This is similar to masala uttapam but here you have to add one more layer of batter to make a sandwich layer of potatoes. This is equally easy and quick if you have batter and masala (potato mixture) ready.
Bread besan toast is an easy and simple bread snack item for kids or even for adults. In this recipe, bread is coated with spiced chickpea flour and pan-fried. Hence it won’t take more than 5 – 7 minutes to prepare kid’s tiffin box. To make it flavourful add bell peppers, onions into the flour batter. This is in fact savory French toast
23. Ragi Idli
Ragi idli is a healthy tiffin box recipe for kids. The batter is made instantly. But to quicken you can make the batter and store it in the refrigerator. In the morning busy hours you just need to steam it for 10 minutes. Healthy breakfast is ready for your kid. Well, with this batter you can make small pancakes, crepes, paniyaram quickly.
Another healthy breakfast item. This is made with moong dal. But here you need to do soak dal for 2 – 3 hours. So I would say make all the soaking, grinding part from the night itself. So in busy hours in the morning, you just have to spread the batter on greased pan or griddle.
Another instant breakfast recipe for kids tiffin box. This is made with semolina or rava and curd. You need to soak it for 10 – 15 minutes. Rest it does not take long to get cooked. Spread it on the hot pan and make uttapam or dosa.
Lunch items are for kids above 5 years. When kids cross pre-primary and primary, they are more matured and now well trained to eat their own. Also, they have longer school time than pre-primary kids. So here you can introduce these items which they will enjoy in their tiffin box and at the same time, these are healthy also.
But since rice is a carb-rich food, give that in limited quantity else kids may feel dizzy and sleepy during class hours. But again in small quantities and once or twice a week is absolutely fine. Read my rice recipes collection for a better idea of these recipes.
Mexican rice is an easy rice recipe and takes less than 30 minutes. this is a healthy tiffin box idea in fact. It’s loaded with the goodness of tomatoes and corns basically. This is mildly spiced and excellent for kids.
Methi is not a kids favorite item. But when you will spice it up with rice and peas, it’s delicious. Try to reduce the bitterness of methi leaves to make it kids friendly. But this is really a healthier option and we should try making a habit of eating good healthy foods in kids since childhood.
Soya bean pulao is a quick rice recipe made in 5 minutes in the pressure cooker. What do we want more? Again rich in protein soya chunks will keep the kid full for longer. Add more vegetables and lesser spices to make this healthy for your kids.
This is another quick vegetable loaded rice recipe for kids. It doesn’t take more than 15 minutes if you have done all the preparation of chopping vegetables from the night. Or chop them instantly using a vegetable chopper or food processor. But I do chop them (except onion) from night and store in the refrigerator.
This is the quickest rice recipe. Better if you have leftover rice. Just saute them with crunchy peanuts and season it with spices and lemon juice. Very different but delicious and kids will enjoy this rice.
Similarly, keep some boiled potatoes in the refrigerator from night to fasten the process. This is a simple and quick recipe. You may saute potatoes with spices. But you can too add spices to mashed potatoes and make the stuffing.
this is also a quick paratha recipe. grate cauliflower and squeeze out in a muslin cloth to reduce water as much as possible. Now add salt and other spices to make stuffing. Shallow fry stuffed paratha and tiffin box is ready in 10 – 12 minutes only.
This Mughlai paratha is a kind of paneer paratha in which I’m using sauteed paneer or paneer burji as stuffing. You can save time by mixing spices with grated paneer and use this mixture for stuffing. basically making a paneer stuffed paratha or paneer paratha.
Quick and easy bread recipe that takes less than 15 minutes. Here I would suggest adding spices looking at the age of your kid. If the kid is less than 10 years, add pav bhaji masala and red chili in a limit that kid can eat. Instead, you can also make simple bread poha or bread upma if the kid is younger.
Same with Tawa pulao. Though these are easy and quick recipes, add spices according to your kid’s age. Again you can keep it simple with minimal use of spices.
Buttery pav bhaji is best for occasional days. Bhaji is in fact made with lots of vegetables. But just keep spices low for kids. For this tiffin box recipe, you need to plan a little bit and do preparation from the night so that you can make this in just 10 minutes. So preparation is boiling veggies and mash them really well. Chop or puree tomatoes and bell peppers. So in the morning heat pan and saute chopped onion ginger garlic tomatoes and add spices and mashed veggies.
Mushroom Matar pulao is a mildly spiced rice recipe for kids’ tiffin boxes. Pressure cook this in just 5 – 7 minutes. No preparation required to make this rice.
Make rice and mix vegetable fry well in advance. Then mix them and saute again to make veg fried rice quickly. Otherwise, you can make this fresh but that will take a little more time. Another way is vegetable tehri.
Vegetable tehri is quick rice made instantly in a pressure cooker and loaded with lots of vegetables. Takes hardly 5 – 10 minutes for whole preparation.
Another healthy kid’s tiffin box idea is roti/ paratha/ poori and sabzi. Make any dry sauteed vegetables and pack it with any flatbreads. Another option is aloo kachori. That is also easy to make.
